Make learning weather fun with this engaging weather activity for kids! This interactive preschool lesson plan instructs young students about sunny, rainy, windy, and cloudy days using fun experiments, songs, and pretend play. Perfect for early childhood education, these activities encourage curiosity and observation while making learning fun and interactive!

Objective:

By the end of this lesson, preschoolers will:

  1. Recognize different kinds of weather (sunny, rainy, windy, cloudy).
  2. Understand simple weather changes.
  3. Explain weather experiences through experiments.

Materials Needed:

  • Weather-themed books (e.g., “The Weather Girls” by Aki, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” by Judi Barrett)
  • Craft supplies (construction paper, cotton balls, glue, markers, scissors, etc.)
  • Weather flashcards or images
  • A weather chart or poster
  • Music for weather-themed songs (e.g., “Mr. Sun,” “Rain, Rain, Go Away”)
  • Printable weather worksheets (optional)
  • Sensory materials (shaving cream for snow, blue water for rain, etc.)

Daily Activities

Day 1: Introduction to Weather

Preschool Lesson Plan: Fun Weather Activities for Kids
  • Activity: Start with a group discussion of different types of weather. Use flashcards or photographs to symbolise sunny, rainy, cloudy, windy, and snowy weather.
  • Interactive Discussion: Ask questions like, “What do you wear when it’s sunny?” or “What does the sky look like when it’s cloudy?”
  • Activity: Make a “Weather Wheel.” Use a printable template or make one with paper plates. Cut the plate into sections and label each with a weather type. Use a Brad fastener to hold an arrow in place.
  • Song: Sing “What’s the Weather Like Today?” to the tune of “Oh My Darling Clementine.”

Day 2: Sunny Days

  • Activity: Tell children how the sun causes plants to grow and keeps us warm. Shine a flashlight to show how the sun provides light.
  • Craft: Make a sun using yellow construction paper and handprint shapes. Have children trace their hands and place them around a yellow circle to create sun rays.
  • Song: Sing “Mr. Sun” and have children dance and play like the sun.
  • Science Experiment: Place a piece of black construction paper outside in the sun with objects on top. Return later to see how the sun bleaches the paper.

Day 3: Rainy Days

Rainy Day
  • Activity: Read a rain book, such as “The Rain Came Down” by David Shannon. Discuss the water cycle and how rain helps plants and animals.
  • Craft: Create a rain cloud with cotton balls and blue raindrops. Glue cotton balls on a blue piece of paper and add blue ribbon or blue paper strips underneath to resemble rain.
  • Song: Sing “Rain, Rain, Go Away” and use fingers to act out rain falling.
  • Sensory Play: Fill a tray with blue water and small cups for children to pour and play with “rain.”

Day 4: Windy Days

  • Activity: Explain what wind is and how it causes objects to move. Model wind using a fan or blowing bubbles.
  • Craft: Make a windsock using paper and streamers. Color a paper tube with markers and add streamers to the end.
  • Game: Play “Wind Blows,” a musical chairs game where children run when the “wind” (music) blows.
  • Science Experiment: Blow on objects of different shapes (feathers, paper, leaves) and note how the wind affects them.
Windy Day

Day 5: Snowy Days

  • Activity: Talk about snow and cold. Tell students that every snowflake is unique.
  • Craft: Create a snowflake by using white paper and scissors. Fold the paper and cut along the lines to make an even snowflake.
  • Sensory Play: Use fake snow or shaving cream for sensory play. Let children play with and learn about the texture.
  • Song: Sing “Frosty the Snowman” or “Let It Snow.”
  • Story Time: Read “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats.
